Photographing nature requires patience, a keen eye, and often, a bit of luck.During one of my expeditions through the Sooretama Biological Reserve in Espírito Santo, I experienced one of those magical moments that turn a regular day of wildlife photography into an unforgettable memory. We were slowly driving along a road within the reserve when a tiny, almost invisible detail caught my attention: a perfectly positioned hummingbird nest, almost at eye level.

The Cushioned Nest

I have seen many hummingbird nests throughout my career, but this one was special. Built with moss and lined with a delicate layer of down, it looked like the most comfortable nest in the world. Inside, a tiny mother rested peacefully, as if she had created the perfect cradle for her chicks. The scene radiated a sense of care and protection, reminding me that while nature can be harsh at times, it also holds moments of pure tenderness.

Capturing the Moment Without Disturbance

To avoid disturbing the tiny bird, I kept a respectful distance. Still, I was able to capture this heartwarming moment. The mother remained in the nest, calm and unbothered by my presence. After taking the necessary shots for my book about the reserve, we continued on our way, leaving behind a scene that will stay in my memory forever.

The Delicate White-bellied Hummingbird

The White-bellied Hummingbird (Chrysuronia versicolor), the species of the mother in the nest, is found in several South American countries, including Brazil.Small yet incredibly agile, it is a master of the skies, hovering effortlessly while feeding on flower nectar—a signature trait of hummingbirds.

Beauty and Fragility

Witnessing and photographing this scene made me reflect on how every tiny detail in nature has its value. A well-built nest, a dedicated mother, a preserved environment. All these elements contribute to a delicate balance that depends on our protection and respect.

And you, reader—have you ever seen a nest as cozy as this one?
